Mining and Gas

Opposition to mining and gas extraction in NSW is growing as the industry expands and its impacts are better understood.

NSW residents are watching new mining and gas extraction projects being approved at an increasing rate across the state, and are increasingly confronted with threats to water quality and availability, air quality, health, food production and other productive industries. Mining creates permanent, destructive changes to natural systems, contributing to significant levels of vegetation clearing, land degradation, biodiversity fragmentation, loss of groundwater‐dependent ecosystems and the break down of communities.

Expansion of coal mining and exploration for coal seam methane (CSM) are limiting safe and sustainable jobs and reducing revenue from other more sustainable industries. The short‐term profits and substantial state revenue delivered from mining does not justify the harm to natural resources and ecosystems that provide essential services to our growing communities, such as safe clean drinking water and productive agricultural land.

natural areas such as National Parks to protect our community and environment against the risk of coal
seam gas exploration and extraction, according to the Nature Conservation Council of NSW.

“Prospective Landcom buyers in south‐west Sydney are not the only ones the NSW government has kept in the dark about coal seam gas drilling in their backyard, communities across the state are waking up to

The facts on Coal Seam Gas

  • One of the most common ways of mining coal seam gas is hydraulic fracturing, known as 'fracking'.
  • Fracking involves pumping huge quantities of water – frequently laced with toxic chemicals like toluene and benzene – into the coal seam to crack it.
  • The coal cracks and the gases rush in to the bore, ready to be captured.
  • About 36 toxic chemicals are used in the coal seam gas extraction process in Australia and many have not been properly assessed for safety against Australian standards.

Nature Conservation Council joins calls for halt on coal seam gas

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW today called on both the NSW Government and Opposition to seriously consider a moratorium on exploration licenses for coal seam gas mining projects until environment, water supply and other risks can be appropriately assessed.

The discovery of carcinogenic substances in three coal seam gas wells in Queensland shows the critical need for strong environment and health protections for coal seam gas exploration and mining across Australia.
