Bushfire in the Landscape: Different Values, a Shared Vision

2011 Bushfire Conference LogoThe Bushfire Program's Eighth Biennial Bushfire Conference (2011) was a great success. A total of 240 delegates attended, representing 43 groups from seven states and territories. Twenty eight high calibre presenters addressed biodiversity, Indigenous, agricultural and risk values.

The conference explored how differing values and land uses influence the application of fire in the Australian landscape. It highlighted the importance of considering the human element when working towards ecologically sustainable bushfire management. Specifically there was a desire for Indigenous groups, fire ecologists, and fire managers to work together to reinvigorate Indigenous Fire Management in NSW. It was also acknowledged that developing effective community engagement strategies which communicate that prescribed burning is not a pancea, is critical for conserving biodiversity and mitigating risk to life and property.
