What is Climate Change? PDF Print E-mail

Climate change fact sheet

Since the industrial revolution in the 1800s, human activities have been rapidly raising the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

This means the heat trapping effect is getting stronger. This is referred to as global warming or climate change.

Switch to GreenPower PDF Print E-mail

Fact Sheet: Switch to GreenPower

You don't have to physically install solar electricity panels or put up your own wind turbine to use renewable electricity - you can buy GreenPower instead.

More than half of household greenhouse emissions come from electricity and we generate 90% of electricity by burning coal, the most polluting source. By choosing 100% GreenPower you can reduce your electricity emissions to zero.

NSW Action on Climate Change: cut 30% of greenhouse pollution by 2020 PDF Print E-mail
30% cuts briefing Anything less than greenhouse cuts of 30% by 2020 risks the human, economic, and environmental future of NSW.

Human induced climate change is already affecting NSW, and without urgent action to reduce greenhouse pollution we face a future of increasing drought, severe storms, and climate conditions never before experienced. We need to reduce greenhouse pollution by at least 30% below 1990 levels by 2020 if we are to avoid crossing the danger threshold of a 2ºC global temperature rise.

Download the NSW Action on Climate Change briefing paper that shows where we are now, why we need a 30% target, and how we can achieve it (pdf, 132KB).

The Great Opportunity: 25% Renewable Energy for NSW PDF Print E-mail

ImageState and national environment groups are calling for NSW to developing a strong renewable energy industry to combat climate change. The report “The Great Opportunity: 25% Renewable Energy for NSW” outlines that a 25% renewable energy target for NSW would conservatively deliver:

  • 4,000 new permanent jobs
  • $9 billion new investment in NSW
  • 4000 MW new electricity generation capacity equivalent to 2 coal-fired power stations
  • A 13% reduction in electricity sector greenhouse emissions on current levels by 2020
  • Enough renewable electricity to power every household in NSW.

Following the release of this report in October 2006, Premier Iemma committed to at least a 15% renewable energy target by 2020, following a review of the target in 2007. This isn't high enough to make a big dent in NSW greenhouse gas emissions. Environment groups will be calling for the target to be increased to at least 25%.
