Draft NSW Wetlands Policy fails to go far enough PDF Print E-mail
Wandering whistling duckNSW’s inland aquatic ecosystems have undergone significant changes since European settlement, with about 50 per cent of them lost over the past 200 years, according to the 2006 NSW State of the Environment Report.

The NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change has drafted a NSW Wetlands Policy aimed at guiding wetland managers and increasing cross-government approaches to wetland conservation.

The Nature Conservation Council has a long history of participation in the policy and managements of Wetlands in NSW and welcomed the recent opportunity to make a submission on the draft NSW Wetlands Strategy. The NCC identified several areas where we thought the policy could be strengthened.

Toorale purchase returns water to Darling PDF Print E-mail

water flowEnvironmental water flows in the Darling River will be significantly boosted with the Federal Government assisting the NSW Government to purchase Toorale Station for $23.74 million.

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW welcomes the State-Federal cooperation and believes purchasing water to guarantee environmental flows plays an important in restoring the Murray River to good health.

Thredbo Oil Spill PDF Print E-mail
Thredbo River by Ian SandersonLast weekend an estimated 1,000 litres of diesel oil spilled into the Thredbo River, allegedly from a holding tank in Thredbo Village. The NSW Fire Brigade quickly responded placing booms at various locations across the river in an attempt to contain the spread of the oil slick, visible on the surface of the river. However, the spill continued throughout Saturday and well into Sunday before the source of the leakage was contained, raising questions about access to potential chemical spoilers of the alpine environment.

With NSW gripped by the most serious drought on record and alarming climate change, 2 million Australians, wetlands and aquatic ecosystems are facing increasing hardship on the Murray-Darling System.

Help save the Warrego RiverAfter weeks of campaigning, and many letters from our supporters, Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has cancelled the auction of water licences for the Warrego River.

Graziers, environmentalists and the downstream community have been united in their calls for the sale not to proceed.

Clarence River Dams PDF Print E-mail
In April 2007 the National Water Commission (NWC), in a report released by Federal Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull, outlined proposals to provide urban water supplies for South East Queensland from catchments in Northern NSW. The Nature Conservation Council is strongly opposed to the proposed options which include plans to dam tributaries of the Clarence River and pipe water from there hundreds of kilometres north to Queensland.
