Project CoordinatorMarnie Kikken, Nature Conservation Council of NSW Contact Marnie Project Facilitators Dr Lyn Carson has written handbooks on community engagement and many articles and book chapters on public participation, including a book, with Brian Martin, Random Selection in Politics (Praeger, 1999).
She draws on her earlier experience as an elected local government representative to design and conduct participatory processes.
She has also participated in many examples of active democracy - including Australia's first consensus conference, Australia's first two deliberative polls, a number of citizens' juries, a combined citizen's panel and televote and Australia’s first youth jury.
Dr Carson is an associate professor in applied politics at the University of Sydney with the United States Study Centre. She teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses about public involvement in decision making, and conducts local and global research into deliberative innovations.
Dr Kath Fisher divides her time between mentoring and supervising postgraduate students in her role as Associate Dean of Graduate Studies at Southern Cross University and working as a consultant facilitator to government and non-government organisations. She has many years experience in facilitation and group processes, especially in community consultation, strategic planning and team-building with a research interest and practical skills in community consultation processes that incorporate deliberative processes, particularly citizens' juries. Kath has also been a teacher in universities and TAFE for over 30 years in the areas of politics, sociology, economics, participatory democracy, group processes, communication and social research. Her PhD used an emancipatory action research methodology to investigate empowering approaches to teaching and demystifying economics. She has recently co-authored a book for postgraduate students: Organizing and Managing Your Research: a practical guide for postgraduates published by Sage Publications London, 2007. Kath has lived on an intentional community for 20 years, which offers ongoing practical experience of participatory decision making and small group processes.
Reference Group The Reference Group brings a breadth of experience and knowledge to the project team and has been formed to provide input and advice to the Project Coordinator on the direction and implementation of the project.
