TAKE ACTION: New South Wales needs a planning system that protects the environment and our communities

Our environmental laws are under attack.

Right now, developers and mining companies are lobbying to weaken essential environmental protections and public participation rights in the planning system in order to get fast-tracked development approvals.

The natural environment - our bushland, coasts, forests and rivers – is under very real threat. Long term strategic planning and robust environmental assessment is needed to keep our air and water clean and safe, and protect the health and well being of local communities.

NSW's largest housing development overturned a second time by court

NCC member group Sweetwater Action Group has successfully had NSW's largest housing development for 7500 dwellings overturned a second time by the Land and Environment Court.

Sweetwater Action Group President Chris Parker called it a "sweet victory", with the firmly believing the State government was wrong to accept the same development again after it had been thrown out by the Land and Environment Court in 2009.

Part 3A laws scrapped

The Nature Conservation Council of NSW has welcomed the decison by the new State government to abolish Part 3A of NSW's planning laws, beginning with an immediate halt to new applications.

Premier Barry O'Farrell says the scrapping of Part 3A would be done in stages. In the first phase, no new Part 3A applications for private residential, commercial, retail or coastal development will be accepted.

Conservation groups release Liveable Western Sydney Policy

Environmental groups today launched a Liveable Western Sydney Policy to protect the environmental health of Sydney residents. The policy aims to curb sprawl, reduce air pollution and protect green spaces.

“Sydney’s environment is at the crossroads. Hundreds of thousands of people are exposed to unhealthy air; sprawl will worsen traffic congestion and eat up green spaces and bushland; and rising dirty energy costs. It’s not the sort of future anyone wants,” said Jeff Angel, Director of Total Environment Centre.
